North American Testing Corporation (NATC), a subsidiary of the International Speedway Corporation, contracted with Bohannan Huston to acquire geometric data on the 2.66-mile tri-oval track and the surrounding walls at the Talladega Superspeedway for upcoming modifications. BHI collected the geometric data using the Leica Geosystems HDS 3000 terrestrial LiDAR sensor. BHI's conventional survey crew provided control points to allow for transformation of the LiDAR data to a project coordinate system.

Since maintaining the character and feel of the speedway racing surface is of utmost importance, NATC chose laser technology because of its ability to collect surface data at a point spacing unmatched using conventional survey methods. Thus, the geometric data used to engineer modifications was as accurate as possible.

Data acquisition for this project took approximately one week and included 81 scans. LiDAR crews acquired over 72,000,000 points of the racing surface, pit road, adjacent skid aprons and surround walls. After acquisition, BHI post-processed the data and the following deliverables were created and delivered to the client five weeks later.

  • Bentley MicroStation files with vector linework representing the slope of the track and height of the walls surrounding the track
  • InRoads digital terrain models of the track surface
  • High resolution digital photography
