Bohannan Huston was contracted by Santa Fe County, New Mexico to provide new, natural color, 0.5' digital orthophotography for 900 square miles of Santa Fe County, New Mexico. Santa Fe took the lead in bringing together a consortium of agencies: The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG), The City of Santa Fe, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to help pay for the project.

The project required a very short time frame between acquisition and delivery. In order to meet this aggressive schedule, BHI subcontracted with 3001, Inc. to acquire new digital aerial imagery with the ZI DMC large format sensor. Utilizing this technology has multiple advantages, most notable the elimination of film production and film scanning. These tasks alone would have added at least two more weeks to the overall schedule of the project.

Another benefit with digital aerial acquisition, the camera operator has the ability to review thumbnails of each frame acquired to ensure the adequate coverage of the project area and no shadows from clouds or clouds themselves are within the frames acquisition image. In 2000, Santa Fe County contracted with BHI for 1', natural color orthophotography and 2' LiDAR-derived surface.
The county was able to leverage the surface dataset from the 2000 project to minimize and expedite the production of new high-resolution orthophotography. In addition, the county had contracted BHI for numerous Blue Book geodetic control points across the project area in support of survey and mapping geospatial products. Santa Fe County is the only county in the state with Blue Booking control monuments. The 900 square miles of 0.5' natural digital orthophotography was delivered to the local, county, state and regional authorities in New Mexico State Plane, Central Zone, NAD83, US Feet and was delivered in less than 45 days after completed acquisition. In addition, 75 square miles of 0.5' CIR data was delivered within 15 days of the RGB based upon the new US National Grid System (USNG) UTM Zone 13 North. The consortium also realized the advantages of a full resolution ECW mosaic of the entire project area for their GIS enterprises. The speed of display of the compressed imagery compliments the services and multiple demands for information put upon their personnel.
  • BHI provided 0.5', natural color, digital orthophotography covering 900 square miles
  • The digital aerial imagery was acquired with the ZI DMC large format sensor
  • The full resolution, ECW format introduces improved compression capabilities to the data
