Z/I Imaging Corporation has issued a press release recognizing Bohannan Huston’s involvement on the first North American project to utilize the Z/I Digital Modular Camera (DMC). Z/I is the world's largest company dedicated to developing and supporting Earth Imaging tools. The project, for the New Mexico State Engineer’s Office, captured imagery of New Mexico’s San Juan River Basin, covering more than 700 noncontiguous square miles along the New Mexico-Colorado border. 3001 Inc. flew the project at 8,500 feet (AGL). BH’s Spatial Data Group, which was selected to provide digital terrain modeling and new high resolution orthophotography, received postprocessed data sets – natural color, near-infrared and black and white – generated from the DMC software just days after flight completion. The data was seamlessly downloaded into our Image Station® softcopy photogrammetry system for immediate processing. The Z/I DMC delivers incomparable clarity, sharpness and accuracy in record time. Because there is no film to process, an estimated two to three weeks can be cut from the overall processing time for a project of this scope.

The DMC was designed to support large-scale aerial photogrammetric missions that demand high-resolution and accuracy. According to Z/I Imaging, the camera received praise for image accuracy and speed of processing. Dennis Sandin, BHI senior vice president, said “We were astonished with the success of our first aerial triangulation solution with the DMC data. It was two or three times better than our typical film solution. One of the time-saving advantages of the DMC technology was that once we created the aerotriangulation solution for the panchromatic, we could use it across all three data sets – panchromatic, RGB color and color infrared.” The project’s end user – the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer (OSE) – was pleased as well: “We ended up getting three data sets for the price of one. And we were amazed at how fast the products were made available,” said Gar Clarke, OSE GIS Coordinator.

BHI’s Spatial Data Group continues to be on the cutting edge of technology. The Group is currently beginning its second project using the Z/I DMC: 1245 square miles of new digital orthophotography and surface mapping for Dona Ana County, New Mexico. The project will support the county's effort to comply with FEMA for flood plain insurance and other applications.
